Camp Living

Camp comfort that earns its ounces — chairs, living gear, and details that change how an evening feels after a long day.

Quick Verdict

Buy if you want a genuinely relaxing chair for car camping, beach evenings, backyard fires, or long nights watching the stars. The NEMO Stargaze Reclining Camp Chair in Marsh (SKU 811666038265) is $279.95, with a minimum weight of 7 lb 13 oz / 3.55 kg. It combines a suspended swinging seat, body-weight-controlled auto-recline, and an adjustable padded headrest on an aluminum suspension frame. It makes the most sense for someone who spends hours sitting around camp and values comfort over minimizing gear.

Skip if you need a light chair to carry far from the car, a compact seat for tight storage, or a traditional upright camp chair mainly for eating at a table. At 7 lb 13 oz / 3.55 kg, with a packed length of 26.5 inches, the Stargaze is a substantial piece of camp furniture. Its suspended movement and reclining geometry are designed for relaxing, not for replacing a conventional dining chair.

What Stands Out

  • Automatic reclining without mechanical adjustments. Lean back and shift your body weight to change the sitting angle. There’s no lever and no preset positions to choose from.
  • A suspended seat that actually swings. Tensioned straps support a smooth, hammock-like swinging motion and a deep reclining angle.
  • A larger, adjustable padded headrest. The headrest can extend well beyond the backrest and adjusts on the fly for a wide range of heights, giving real support when you lean back to watch the sky.
  • A redesigned frame with more shoulder room. Curved upright poles accommodate broader shoulders and add elbow room, and a more intuitive pole design cuts down on setup steps.
  • A low center of gravity for uneven campsites. NEMO designs the chair for stability on surfaces from sandy beaches to rocky terrain and spongy fields, where ordinary camp chairs can feel less secure.
  • Quick-draining monofilament mesh. The breathable, non-absorbent seat material drains quickly after rain, resists bacteria, and is built to withstand sun exposure.
  • Two flexible side cupholders and a proper carrying case. Side pouches keep drinks and small items within reach, and the zippered case with an adjustable shoulder strap makes the chair easier to move.

In The Field

There’s a point during most of my Pacific Northwest camping trips when the day’s work is finished. The tent is up, dinner is handled, the fire is settled, and there’s finally time to sit without thinking about what comes next. That’s exactly where a chair like the Stargaze makes sense. Around the Olympic Peninsula, especially at drive-in campgrounds and coastal sites, evenings stretch for hours. The temperature drops, someone adds another log, and a chair that felt fine during dinner gets less comfortable as the night goes on.

A conventional folding chair holds you in one upright position. The Stargaze’s seat hangs from tensioned straps inside a freestanding aluminum frame, so you can swing gently or recline just by shifting your weight. Sit upright and the seat follows you; lean back and the backrest tilts into a recline. There’s no lever and no angle to pick before settling in. That changes how the chair gets used. Over a long fireside evening I lean forward to talk, settle back while someone else tells a story, and shift to look at the sky, and the suspension follows each move. It’s also different from a rocking chair: a rocker relies on curved runners moving across the ground, while the Stargaze’s frame stays planted and only the seat swings, which matters on gravel where a rocker wouldn’t move smoothly. If you prefer a completely stationary seat, know that the movement is the point of the design.

The larger padded headrest is the improvement I’d appreciate most. When you recline in a camp chair, head and neck support decide whether the position stays comfortable after the first few minutes. Without it, you end up holding your head forward or letting it drop back awkwardly. NEMO’s headrest adjusts while you’re in the chair and can extend well beyond the top of the backrest for taller users. That pays off when looking up. At a Cascade foothills campground or on a clear night near the coast, stargazing is one of the few activities that truly benefits from a reclining chair, and a supported head lets you stay there without straining your neck. The curved upright poles add room around the shoulders and elbows, so the comfort upgrades go into the seated experience rather than accessories.

My biggest concern with any suspended chair is stability on uneven ground, and Pacific Northwest campsites rarely offer a showroom floor. Olympic Peninsula campgrounds have compacted gravel pads, forest duff, roots, and damp grass; beach sites add sand, and river bars are full of uneven stones. NEMO designs the Stargaze around a low center of gravity, with the frame as the stable base while the seat moves above it. Unlike a hammock, it needs no trees or anchor points. Stability still doesn’t excuse poor site selection. On soft sand or saturated ground, I’d check that the feet are evenly supported and not sinking. On a rocky river bar, I’d find a reasonably level spot rather than balancing the frame across big stones, and I wouldn’t take "rocky terrain" as permission to set it on a steep slope.

Setup is where the updated pole design helps. NEMO says it cuts down on setup steps, which matters because camp furniture shouldn’t become another chore after arriving. Even so, a suspended seat on its own frame takes a few more steps than a chair that unfolds in one motion, so I’d assemble it once for the evening rather than setting it up and packing it away repeatedly. Packed, it measures 26.5 x 7.0 x 8.5 inches, and that length matters more than the narrow cross-section suggests. At 7 lb 13 oz / 3.55 kg minimum weight, this is gear I’d move in a vehicle and carry a short distance to the site. The zippered case’s adjustable shoulder strap helps for the walk from the parking area to a picnic site, beach access, or campsite. As for size, NEMO’s spec lists 30 x 39 x 41 inches assembled, though its dimensions diagram shows 37 inches wide by 27 deep by 41 high, so I’d leave some margin when planning space around a fire.

The seat is breathable monofilament mesh rather than padded fabric, which makes sense for a chair that lives outdoors. NEMO describes it as non-absorbent, resistant to bacteria, able to withstand sun exposure, and quick to drain if left in the rain. Around Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, overnight moisture can leave exposed gear damp by morning even on a dry weekend, so a seat that drains rather than holds water is easier to live with. I’d still put the chair away during prolonged bad weather and not store the chair or its case wet. Mesh also lets cool evening air through more readily than a padded chair, so on shoulder-season nights I’d keep a blanket or insulating layer nearby.

The two flexible side cupholders hold a drink, phone, keys, or sunscreen that would otherwise end up on the ground, and on a chair that moves, attached storage is especially handy. I’d still keep hot drinks secure and avoid overfilling them while swinging or reclining.

The Stargaze is easy to justify when the campsite is the destination: a weekend at a drive-in campground, an evening by a beach fire, or a backyard gathering. It’s less convincing as something to sit on briefly between activities, and I wouldn’t choose it as my main chair at a dining-height table. At $279.95, it’s a comfort upgrade, not basic camping equipment, and much simpler chairs seat you adequately for far less. If I’m moving camp daily or carrying everything far from the vehicle, a much lighter packable chair is the better choice. The version I’m describing is Marsh (SKU 811666038265); NEMO also offers Algiers Blue and Black Pearl, and on our October 8, 2026 check all three colors were sold out with a waitlist open. When I’m settling into a basecamp for several nights, though, I’d bring it specifically because I plan to spend much of the evening sitting in it.

Pros

  • Excellent lounging comfort: The swinging seat and automatic reclining mechanism create a relaxing, hammock-like sitting experience.
  • Thoughtful upper-body support: The adjustable padded headrest and curved uprights accommodate different heights and add shoulder room.
  • Stable freestanding design: The low center of gravity and aluminum suspension frame suit varied car-camping surfaces.
  • Practical outdoor details: Quick-draining mesh, two flexible side cupholders, and a zippered shoulder-strap carrying case improve everyday usability.

Cons

  • Expensive for camp seating: At $279.95, it’s a meaningful investment compared with conventional folding chairs.
  • Heavy and relatively long when packed: 7 lb 13 oz / 3.55 kg and a 26.5-inch packed length make it best suited to vehicle-supported camping.
  • Not ideal for fixed upright seating: The suspended movement and reclining design are better for lounging than for eating or working at a standard-height table.

Final Thoughts

The NEMO Stargaze Reclining Camp Chair makes more sense once you stop thinking of camp chairs as interchangeable. Most folding chairs solve the basic problem of keeping you off the ground. The Stargaze is designed around what happens after you sit down.

Its suspended seat swings gently, the backrest reclines automatically as you shift your weight, and the adjustable padded headrest supports the kind of relaxed posture that makes a long evening outside enjoyable. Those are meaningful advantages for car camping.

I particularly like the combination of the low center of gravity, curved aluminum uprights, and breathable mesh. Together, they suit established campsites where comfort matters more than packing efficiency.

The compromises are equally clear. At $279.95, this is a premium purchase, and its weight and packed length limit its practicality for trips where every inch and ounce matter.

For my kind of Pacific Northwest basecamp, whether a few nights near the coast, a quiet campground in the Cascades, or a long evening around a backyard fire, the Stargaze makes sense as a dedicated relaxation chair. It isn’t the chair I’d take everywhere. It’s the chair I’d look forward to using once camp is set.
